MINDFULNESS & SELF-COMPASSION: FINDING QUIET IN THE CHAOS
In a culture that measures worth by productivity, it is easy to get caught up in a cycle of doing—leaving you stuck in self-criticism, chronic worry, or burnout. Mindfulness and Self-Compassion are not just nice ideas; they are evidence-based clinical tools that allow you to pause, notice your experience without judgment, and treat yourself with the same kindness you so freely give to others.
Whether you’re navigating the transition into parenthood, questioning your career path, or managing the internal noise of perfectionism, I help you slow down and integrate mindful practices into the small pockets of your day. Together, we create a space that is grounding, focused on the present moment, and dedicated to building a deeper connection with yourself.
What is Mindfulness & Self-Compassion Therapy in San Diego, CA?
MINDFULNESS
The practice of paying attention to the present moment with curiosity rather than judgment. It allows you to notice your thoughts and bodily sensations so that you can respond to your life rather than simply reacting to it.
WHERE DO YOU FEEL IT IN YOUR BODY?
We practice paying attention to how you experience stress, anxiety or unease. Where is it showing up in your body? Is it an uncomfortable sensation or is there no sensation at all?
Lump in your throat
Butterflies in your stomach
Heaviness on your chest
Numbness
We pause, and we notice.
SELF-COMPASSION
Treating yourself with the same care and understanding you would offer a close friend—especially during seasons of stress or self-doubt. When we feel tension or discomfort in the body, it’s your body's way of communicating that the nervous system is feeling overstimulated. Instead of trying to fix the feeling, we acknowledge it with care and kindness.
Lump in your throat
Let’s pause and take a slow sip of water
Butterflies in your stomach
Place a hand on your lower belly and take a few low and slow breaths
Heaviness on your chest
Use supportive touch by placing both hands over the center of your chest
Numbness
Firmly press your feet into the floor
Cultivating Skills for Your Real Life
In our sessions, we don’t just discuss these concepts—we practice them! For real change to happen, we have to start doing things differently, and weaving these new habits into your daily life. This work is about finding a way to stay connected to yourself, even when you’re distracted and overwhelmed by the realities of the world around you. Our work together may include:
Somatic Grounding: Gentle techniques to help you return to your body and stay present when you feel triggered or overwhelmed.
Softening the Inner Bully: Learn to stop fighting with your inner bully and start stepping back from its influence. We’ll use simple tools to quiet that internal noise, helping you trade harsh judgment for a more grounded, realistic perspective.
The Power of the Pause: Finding small, intentional moments throughout your day—whether during a quiet morning routine or a transition between tasks—to check in with your own nervous system.
Self-Compassion in Action: Learning how to meet your own needs with the same warmth and presence you offer to those around you.

KOALANI LAHR, LMFT
Aloha, I’m Koalani, a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist helping adults slow down, breathe through the noise, and reconnect with the present-moment.
Maybe it’s hard for you to slow down. In fact, when you’re feeling stressed, you end up doing more— you clean the house, fold the laundry, put away dishes, say yes to everything, even though you want to say no. The idea of slowing down makes you feel like you’re about to jump out of your skin.
In our work together, we shift from needing to do, to finding calm in doing less. We use mindfulness and self-compassion as practical tools to help you navigate the heavy moments in your life. Instead of fighting against your thoughts or judging yourself for feeling overwhelmed, we practice meeting those experiences with a gentle, curious presence.
By learning to quiet the inner bully and live in the present moment, you can begin to relate to yourself with the same kindness you so freely give to everyone else. This isn't about being perfect—it's about being whole, grounded, and deeply connected to your own worth.
My practice is fully virtual, secure, and HIPAA-compliant. Because I understand the realities of early parenthood and the fertility journey, infants, breastfeeding, and bottle-feeding are always welcome in our sessions. You deserve a space where you are the priority.
Whether you are navigating the pressure to be perfect or the quiet exhaustion of burnout, there is a way through. Let’s find your steadiness together.
